We only featured songs that received 10 million or more views, or this list would have been extremely long. The top of this list features the most viewed heavy metal videos on YouTube, with the bottom featuring those near the 10 million mark. The view counts are left approximate, rounded off to the nearest million since they will be fluctuating on a daily basis. In the old days of metal, album sales were regarded as the perfect barometer to gauge the popularity of a song or album. With today’s biggest metal bands only selling a fraction of what popular metal bands sold in the 80’s and 90’s, it’s difficult to compare today’s best metal albums to older metal albums in terms of success and popularity. YouTube may help to bridge that gap, though you may notice from this list that some of the genre’s most iconic bands are absent or barely represented. What, no,, Queensryche, Exodus, Faith No More, Celtic Frost, Lamb of God, Venom, Death, or even Judas Priest?

These are the real numbers, and the numbers don’t lie. Near the top of the list, you’ll see the same bands represented over and over again. If you’re wondering why and Avenged Sevenfold appear so prominently on this list, it’s the younger demographic who are frequenting YouTube more than the older metal crowd.

While Motley Crue fans are still listening to their old CDs, Linkin Park fans are listening to their favorite songs on Vevo, which skews numbers. Newness is also a factor. New songs get more views, and tend to settle and slowly grow.

Old songs just grow slowly without an initial popularity surge, giving older songs from, Dio, Iron Maiden, and the disadvantage. A note for this list: You’ll often see multiple uploads of the same song on YouTube.

We only counted the video with the highest view count, and left it at that. We also excluded songs that were live versions of songs that didn’t have recording studio versions, like Linkin Park’s cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” However, if the live version of a song has more view counts than the studio version, we’ll use the version with the higher view count (like Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”). Black Sabbath appears on the list but once.

Even Ozzy’s solo material is on the list only twice. Metallica’s numbers may have been higher had they not resisted VEVO for so many years. They are a latecomer to the world of YouTube, since many videos were removed over the years, decreasing their total view counts. Megadeth isn’t on the list, even for “Symphony of Destruction.” Even Soundgarden appears only once on this list. Others not present: Lacuna Coil, Poison, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Dream Theater, and Children of Bodom.

**UPDATE** Judas Priest is finally on the list with the music video for “Painkiller”. If you’re wondering what artists are making these days through VEVO, which pays more than YouTube, it’s roughly $70,000 for every 10 million views.
