Hi - I have a VW Golf (2003) 2-button key fob where the chrome key ring has broken off. I've managed to separate the parts and the p/n on the key-fob battery-holder sub-assembly is 'HLO 1J0 959 753 AG'. The key looks identical to this and has HAA embossed on the key itself. 'It looks like I can pick up a replacement sub-assembly on Ebay for a fraction of the cost of replacing the key with a dealer, but I'm not sure if I need to get a replacement part with the EXACT same sub-assembly p/n or if any sub-assembly that looks the same (i.e. Two-buttons as above) will do? Any advise from people with experience with this would be very welcome.

That looks like it should work (though the part is out of stock) but the transponder chip in the lower section of the key will have to be adapted to the immobiliser in the instrument panel using specialist software such as VAG TACHO for example (there are others) and the remote control will have to be matched to the central convenience system which is possible using less specialised software such as a registered copy of VCDS which is widely available legally for around £250, VAG TACHO is significantly more expensive. Also the key will have to be cut to match yours and not all locksmiths can do this. There are independent locksmiths who travel around in vans who can do all of this and it is how I have my new keys provided to me for my customers. I suppose one way you could simplify your problem is to just use the upper remote control section of the key and re-use the lower and more complicated to match key and chip section.

Just an update to let other people know how to get around the problem of a broken key ring on the 2-button key fob (2003 MK4 Golf) similar to mine. Same would apply if you have a problem with the buttons.

I purchased an 'empty' top half assembly off Ebay (just a carcass without the PCB or battery) and swapped the original PCB and battery into it and away-to-go. Sad Cafe Misplaced Ideals Rar File. Cost me £4.38 including postage. I suspect that's a big saving on dealer costs. The process of swapping the PCB (transmitter) is simple. Split the old key fob into two halves - there is a slot under the fold-away key-well that takes a screwdriver. Twist the screwdriver and pull apart. Split the original top half (button) assembly to expose the battery sub-assembly and PCB sub-assembly - strong nails does the job.

Split the new top half assembly in a similar way. CAREFULLY prise the old PCB off the two mounting-posts, press it into the new sub-assembly. Use something non-metallic 5. Pop the battery into the other half of the new sub-assembly and then slot the new top-half assembly into the old bottom-half (key) assembly. Took me about 5 minutes.
