I suggest you format the drive, start again, obviously on mains power and ensuring adequate cooling of the laptop and leave it running. Keyboard started working after the drivers were obviously installed automatically in the background. But I then got the message again that installation failed. This was after I was using the laptop for housekeeping tasks.

It suddenly just shut down and up came the failure of install message. So now I'm now I'm starting from scratch at your suggestion and just letting the FBI go to completion. It was label 'System Recovery DVD for Windows Vista Home Premium'. It also stated 'For distribution only with a new HP or Compact, 64-bit notebook PC'. Per HP instruction included in the package I try to install.

It did not work. I called HP tech support and told them my problem. Note: that an HP DV 6000 (at least the one I have) is a 32 bit laptop. Tech support told me that they could not help me. If I try to interrupt the FBI Gui Manager after I get a Vista desktop, I end up with a seemingly working system until it reboots on its own and ultimately comes up with the FAILURE OF INSTALLATION message. At that point, I have no choice but to start the process over again. I think I'm simply going to try to do a full upgrade to Windows 8. That's stil cheaper than buying a new laptop, as my hardware seems to work fine except for the Vista installation problem.
