Hello there, I have a VGNNS140E and the issue is that my webcam has suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago. It was not working properly since a long time ago: I think since I installed Windows 7 64-bit OS (2 years ago) on it and reinstalled ArcSoft Companion 2. At that time it used to work sometimes while other times not; whenever it occured, it disappeared in Device Manager. Previously, it was just needed to reboot the system and the driver would came back, but now it won't. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled ArcSoft, but in Device Manager it is shown in Other Devices tab as 5U875 device (manufacturer Ricoh). At Vaio Support chat, I was told to run a system recovery, but it didn't work.

I would like to get this specific device driver for Win7 x64 OS, since I haven't found it on Sony eSupport. In this forum I have found a lot of other customers who have the same problem, although with different webcam and laptop models. Hello Prodigy, Welcome back to the Forums, and thank you for your Post, Many models around the Fall of 2008 have limited Driver support for Windows 7, as this was when the operating system first released. Due to this fact many component manufacturers only had license agreements for their products to work on the previous (Vista) operating system such as the ArcSoft Software Original Camera Driver The above driver is only for vista. Windows 7 has default drivers that will work to allow the camera to function, however use of the arcsoft software companion for this model was only intended for the Vista OS.

Hello ACS_K52S, First of all, I've done the steps provided by you and I can tell you that running installation in compatibility mode doesn't worked at all, and I don't know why Sony couldn't just release the device driver for download.
Why do anyone ought to install a third-party software (ArcSoft) in order to use a basic function of his laptop?! Secondly, Windows don't recognize the driver (shows code 10 - device could not be started, it's not compatible then). And downgrading my current OS to Vista. No thanks, that's not going to happen. I know that this is no hardware failure, but the lack of the proper device driver, as I have noticed, the webcam often stopped working since I replaced Win Vista with Win7 in my machine (clean install). I'm just wondering why Sony could not release this Ricoh 5U875 driver for Win7 x86-x64.
As you stated, this model was released in fall 2008, and Win7 was released the next year. Logically Vaio owners would soon have their shipped OS replaced by a newer one, since Vista is slower and worst in so many aspects than WinXP or Win7. That's totally predictable! That's one of the worst things that can happen: a customer who owns a laptop which is 2-3 times more expensive than any other laptop manufacturer (with same hardware), gets no support for a basic yet essential device. This even would have had an explanation if my model were shipped with WinXP or a previous OS, and I try to install Win7 or a later version on it, and it would not have compatible drivers for all its devices due to the gap of time between these two releases, etc, but that should not happen with the precedent direct OS version. I'm wondering about the many people, Vaio owners, who may have this same issue as me, as this issue occurs with the VGN-NS, CR, FW and many other series models, and don't find any support (solution) from the manufacturer.
What should we do, buy a new webcam instead of getting it to work!? Or perhaps consider buying a new laptop Oh wait! Today device drivers may not be compatible with next year's OS!
